b. July 22, 1912 — d. March , 2006

Reuben Aaron “R.A.” Miller was a self-taught folk artist, best known for his whirligigs, painted metal cutouts and mixed media drawings on wood boards. Miller lived out most of his life on the same property where he was born, in the East Hall County community of Rabbittown, Georgia; on the outskirts of Gainesville. Starting in the 1970s through the 1990s, Miller's property commanded attention in its own right, as Miller populated the landscape with hundreds of whirligigs and tin artwork. Miller experimented with a number of themes, but is best known for his numerous variations of painted, cut-out metal animals, iconic figures like Elvis Presley and Uncle Sam, as well as religious figures such as angels and devils. However, the most notable of his creations may be his "Blow Oscar," which is based on his cousin, who would always blow his horn passionately whenever he would drive by Miller's property and his short inspirational message, "Lord Love You." His work gained wider recognition in the 1980s, when it was featured in a music video for the Athens-band R.E.M. Widely collected, and in constant demand, Miller is acknowledged as one of the more recognizable folk artists in the United States.
